您 nín

您 is just 你 with 心 (heart) tucked underneath — the polite "you" with a heart.

Take the everyday 你 and slide 心 (heart) under it. That little heart is the whole point: you're addressing someone with extra care. So 您 isn't a different person — it's the same "you," just handed over with both hands.

你 you (casual) 心 heart — the warm, respectful tone

Common Usage & Traps

  • 您好 (nín hǎo) — hello (polite, to strangers or elders)
  • 谢谢您 (xièxie nín) — thank you (respectful)
  • 您慢走 (nín màn zǒu) — take care (said to a departing guest)
  • 您请坐 (nín qǐng zuò) — please, have a seat
  • 您贵姓 (nín guìxìng) — may I ask your surname (set polite greeting)

您 is already singular and respectful, so 您们 sounds like a robot pluralizing "sir." For a group, say 你们, or keep the respect with 您几位 / 您二位.

  • 您 to close friends 你

您 marks social distance. Using it with your best friend, partner, or a kid sounds cold or sarcastic, like you're suddenly angry at them.

If 您 is just polite 你, why does calling my girlfriend 您 make her think I'm angry?

您 isn't "more polite" — it's "more distant." Aim it at your girlfriend and it reads as sarcasm.

Chinese politeness runs on social distance, not on a volume knob you can turn up. 您 marks the other person as outside your inner circle: a customer, an elder, a teacher, a stranger. Point it at your girlfriend or your little brother and you are basically saying "I'm keeping my distance." That lands as cold or mocking, so the real rule is "outsider = 您, insider = 你."

Stranger on the street您好,请问… (fine, just flatter)
(can sound offhand)
A 5-year-old kid你真棒! (weird, stiff)

Can I say 您们 to be polite to a whole group of people?

No. 您 is already respectful and singular, so 您们 isn't standard.

您 is already a respectful singular. Stacking 们 on top is like saying "you-sirs," and native speakers avoid it. To be polite to several people at once, Chinese grabs a counter instead: 您几位 (how many of you, sir/madam) or 您二位 (you two). You will see 您们 in some writing, but in real speech it sounds like a textbook invention.

Greeting a group of guests
Seating two elders
Email to a team

Why do people say 您贵姓 instead of just 你姓什么 when asking a stranger's name?

您贵姓 is the fixed polite script. 贵 ("honorable") lifts the other person's surname; 你姓什么 is fine for peers, blunt for strangers.

Asking a stranger's name in Chinese follows a set script: 您贵姓?(May I ask your honorable surname?). The 您 sets the respectful tone, and 贵 literally lifts the other person up. 你姓什么? sounds fine between friends or in a casual office. Pointed at a new client or an elder, it lands flat, like "So, what's your name?"

(over-formal, funny)
