每 měi

A woman wearing a hair ornament; beautiful.

Every, each, per; often, whenever. A mother (母) with a hairpin above, caring for every one.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 每天 (měi tiān) — every day
  • 每周 (měi zhōu) — every week
  • 每次 (měi cì) — every time
  • 每人 (měi rén) — each person
  • 每年 (měi nián) — every year
  • 每个天 每天

天 already functions as the measure word here; adding 个 is ungrammatical.

  • 每人 每个人

In spoken Chinese, 人 normally needs the measure word 个 after 每. 每人 is formal and rare in speech.

What is the difference between 每 and 各?

每 means 'every' as a whole set; 各 means 'each' as separate individuals.

每 treats the group as a complete unit and usually pairs with a measure word or time noun: 每天, 每次, 每个人. 各 highlights members one by one and often appears in fixed or formal phrases like 各人, 各地, 各校. A common learner error is swapping them: 各天 is not used for 'every day', and 每人 sounds incomplete in speech where 每个人 is expected.
Dimension每各
FocusWhole group, every oneIndividuals, one by one
Common pairs每天, 每周, 每次各人, 各地, 各校
RegisterNeutral, everydayOften formal or fixed
Example我每天七点起床。各人有各人的想法。

Does 每 always need a measure word after it?

Yes. 每 must be followed by a measure word or a time noun that acts like one.

每 cannot stand alone before a bare noun in normal speech. You say 每个人, not 每人; 每天 and 每年 work because 天 and 年 already function as measure words. Learners often drop 个 after 每, which sounds unnatural in conversation even if a formal text might allow it.
