工 gōng

HSK 1 Writing L2

工 is a drawing of a carpenter's square — a builder's tool.

Picture a T-square: one bar across the top, one straight line dropping down. That shape is 工. The ancient form showed a tool used to measure and square up wood, and that's how it picked up meanings of work, craft, and labor. Some scholars argue for a blade or a loom part instead, but the tool story is the one most textbooks go with.

工 tool / work

Common Usage & Traps

  • 工作 (gōngzuò) — work; job
  • 工人 (gōngrén) — worker
  • 工 工作

工 can't stand alone. 我的工 sounds broken to native ears, because 工 only lives inside bigger words.

  • 一个工作 一份工作

Jobs get counted with 份, not the default 个. 一个工作 sounds like you're counting bricks.

  • 我工作在银行 我在银行工作

The place comes before 工作. 我工作在银行 is the classic English word-order leak.

Can you say 我去工 to mean 'I'm going to work'?

No. 工 is a building block, not a word — you need 工作.

On its own, 工 means nothing to a modern ear, so 我去工 lands as broken. It only survives inside words like 工作 and 工人. English pulls the same trick with 'cran-' in cranberry: real inside a word, useless standing alone.

Saying 'my job'我的工作很忙我的工很忙
Saying 'I'm going to work'我去工作我去工
Any everyday sentence工作 / 工人工 by itself

What's the actual difference between 打工 and 工作?

打工 is wage work for someone else; 工作 is the neutral, all-purpose word.

打工 means earning money by working for someone else, often hourly, temporary, or manual, so a student says 我在饭馆打工. 工作 is neutral and covers any job, from flipping burgers to running a company. One more catch: 打工 can never be a noun, so 我的打工 is flat-out wrong.

Meaning 'a job' (noun)我的工作不错我的打工不错
A student's part-time gig他放假去打工他放假去工作
A career position我在公司工作我在公司打工

For 'I'm working right now', do I say 我在工作 or 我做工作?

Say 我在工作. 工作 is already a verb, so 做工作 sounds off.

工作 works as both the noun 'job' and the verb 'to work', so 我工作 means 'I work'. Add 在 when you mean it's happening right now: 我在工作. 做工作 doesn't mean an ordinary job at all — it only survives in a few set phrases with a completely different meaning.

Happening right now我在工作我做工作
Talking about your job我的工作很忙我的做工作很忙
Where you work我在银行工作我工作在银行
