二 èr

HSK 1 Writing L2

二 is just two horizontal lines stacked up — the oldest human way to write 'two'.

Two lines, one above the other. That's the whole character. Ancient writers drew strokes to count things, and two strokes meant two — same logic as tally marks scratched on a napkin. One line is 一, two lines is 二, three lines is 三. The shape has barely changed in three thousand years, which makes 二 one of the few characters you can learn in five seconds.

一 one plain horizontal stroke (the top line) 一 a second horizontal stroke sitting below it (the bottom line)

Common Usage & Traps

  • 十二 (shí'èr) — twelve (10 + 2)
  • 二十 (èrshí) — twenty (2 x 10)
  • 二十二 (èrshí'èr) — twenty-two
  • 二月 (èr yuè) — February (the second month)
  • 星期二 (xīngqī'èr) — Tuesday (day two of the week)
  • 二零二六 (èr líng èr liù) — 2026, read digit by digit
  • 二个人 两个人

The second a measure word shows up (个, 天, 块, 杯), switch to 两. 二个人 sounds like a robot reading a serial number off a box.

  • 二天 两天

Days get counted like objects, not read like digits. 我在这儿待两天 is normal; 二天 marks you as a textbook.

  • 二点 (two o'clock) 两点

Clock hours are counted, not spelled out. 两点 means 2:00. Save 二 for phone numbers, math, and years.

  • 两十 二十

Learners who just learned the 两 rule over-apply it. 二十 is a number word, so 二 stays put.

两 vs 二: When do you use which word for 'two' in Chinese?

Measure word follows, say 两. Counting, math, phone digits, years, say 二.

Think of 两 as the 'count the actual stuff' two, and 二 as the 'number on paper' two. The moment a measure word appears — 个, 天, 块, 杯 — you are counting physical things, so 两 takes over: 两个人, 两天, 两块. 二 owns the abstract number world instead: 十二 (12), 二十 (20), 二月 (February), 星期二 (Tuesday), plus every digit string like phone numbers and years. One trap most learners hit: two o'clock is 两点, never 二点. Clock hours get counted like objects, not read out like digits.

Why do people say 二零二六 for the year 2026 instead of 两千零二十六?

Years get read digit by digit, so it is 二, not 两, and no 千.

Chinese reads a year as a string of digits, not as one big quantity. So 2026 comes out as 二-零-二-六, exactly how you would read a phone number out loud. Say 两千零二十六 and you sound like you are quoting a price or a population count. Phone numbers, ID numbers, room numbers and bus routes all follow the same digit-by-digit habit. No measure word ever shows up in these, so the 两 rule from counting things never gets a chance to fire.
