啊 a, ā

A mouth (口) releasing an open, breathy vocal sound.

An interjection or sentence-final word for surprise, agreement, admiration, questioning, or softening tone. Mouth (口) + 阿 (ā) = voice letting out an “ah!” sound.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 好啊 (hǎo a) — OK! / Sure! (agreeable)
  • 是啊 (shì a) — Yes, indeed / That's right
  • 对啊 (duì a) — Exactly! / Right!
  • 来啊 (lái a) — Come on! / Come here!
  • 谁啊 (shéi a) — Who is it? (softening a question)
  • 什么啊 (shénme a) — What? (expressing surprise or mild disbelief)
  • 啊好 好啊

The word 啊 always follows the word or phrase it modifies; it never comes before it.

  • 是啊吗 是吗

啊 and 吗 are both sentence-final particles and cannot be used together. Use one or the other.

When should I use 啊 instead of 吗 at the end of a sentence?

啊 softens statements or questions, while 吗 turns a statement into a yes/no question.

啊 adds emotion, friendliness, or mild surprise. It does not change a statement into a question by itself. 吗 is a question tag that makes a yes/no question. For example, 好啊 means 'OK!' (agreeable), while 好吗 means 'Is that OK?' (asking for agreement).

What is the difference between 啊 and 呀?

呀 is a sound change of 啊 after vowels like a, e, i, o, ü; they mean the same but 呀 is often smoother.

Both 啊 and 呀 are sentence-final particles that add emotion. 呀 is used after words ending in a, e, i, o, or ü to avoid a glottal stop. For example, 好啊 and 好呀 are both correct, but 好呀 sounds more natural in casual speech. After n or ng, 啊 is preferred.
