学习

xué xí v.

to study; to learn

to study; to learn

Studying, practicing, and acquiring knowledge or skills through repeated effort.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 学习汉语 (xuéxí Hànyǔ) — to study Chinese, formal or classroom
  • 每天学习 (měitiān xuéxí) — to study every day
  • 好好学习 (hǎohǎo xuéxí) — study hard
  • 学习书 看书 / 读书

Books are read, not studied. 学习 does not take physical objects like 书.

  • 学习一个东西 学一个东西 / 学点东西

Casual objects like 东西 sound stiff with formal 学习. Everyday talk drops to 学.

学 vs 学习: when is 学 enough and when do you actually need 学习?

Use 学 for everyday concrete skills; use 学习 for formal study, standalone study, or study vibes.

学车 and 学汉语 are the casual, street-native choices. 学习汉语 is classroom formal but still fine. 学习 is formal, can stand alone as a noun or verb by itself, as in 好好学习 and 学习氛围. Never say 学习书, because books get 看 or 读.

Everyday skill学车 / 学汉语学习开车 (stiff)

Standalone我每天学习我学 (as a full answer)
Study atmosphere学习氛围学习书

If someone asks 你最近忙什么, can you answer just 学习?

Yes. 学习 can stand alone like English 'I'm studying'.

A bare 我学习 sounds complete and natural. A bare 我学 often sounds unfinished, like you forgot the thing. Use 学习 when study itself is the whole activity or topic.

Answer to 忙什么学习学 (as a full answer)
Full sentence我每天学习我每天学 (often incomplete)
With object我学汉语 / 我学习汉语我学习一个东西

Why does 学习汉语 sound okay but 学习书 sounds broken?

You study a subject, but you read a book. So 学习书 fails and 看书 wins.

学习汉语 talks about a subject or skill. 学习书 tries to make a physical object the thing you study. Native speakers say 看书 or 读书 for books.
