们

men suffix

A crowd of people gathered at a gate or doorway. Suffix marking plural for persons and pronouns (我们, 他们, 你们).

Common Usage & Traps

  • 我们 (wǒmen) — we; us
  • 他们 (tāmen) — they; them
  • 朋友们 (péngyoumen) — friends; the friends (as a bunch)
  • 老师们 (lǎoshīmen) — teachers (as a group)
  • 老北京们 (lǎo Běijīngmen) — old-time Beijingers (as a group)
  • 书们 书

们 only pluralizes people in everyday speech. Putting it on objects reads like a machine translation of English -s.

  • 三个朋友们 三个朋友

们 already means a bunch, so pinning an exact number on it counts the group twice. Pick one or the other.

Why can you say 朋友们 but not 书们?

们 sticks to people, not things. 书们 sounds like a bad translation.

们 goes on pronouns like 我们 and 他们, and on nouns that mean people like 朋友们 or 老师们. It does not go on objects: 书, 桌子, 手机 all stay bare no matter how many there are. English -s attaches to everything, so learners write 书们 and natives wince. One exception exists: children's books and poetry say 小动物们 or 花儿们 to sound warm. Do not do that in a WeChat message.

Can you say 三个朋友们?

No. 三个朋友们 counts the group twice, so it sounds broken.

们 already means a bunch, so an exact number on top of it doubles up. You pick one: 三个朋友 or 朋友们. The same logic kills 五个同事们 and 两个学生们. Vague amounts are messier: 很多朋友们 does slip out of native mouths, but teachers and editors cross it out as redundant. When a number is in the sentence, drop the 们.

Do I always need 们 to say friends in Chinese?

No. 朋友 already covers one or many; 们 just pushes the bunch feeling forward.

Chinese nouns do not flip to plural the way English -s forces them to. 我朋友 could be one friend or five, and the situation decides which. Adding 们 makes the whole bunch the focus of the sentence. With pronouns it is required: 我们, 你们, 他们. With people nouns it is a style choice, not a rule you must obey.

“老北京们去茶馆,就是因为想喝茶,也为了跟朋友说说话什么的。” (Old-time Beijingers went to teahouses simply because they wanted tea, and also to chat with friends and such.)
