therefore; so; as a result
所以
Common Usage & Traps
- 因为……所以…… — because... so... (the full pair, cause spelled out)
- 所以我不去 — so I'm not going
- 所以我不喜欢 — so I don't like it
- 所以呢? — so? / then what? (resuming a reason already on the table)
-
我所以不去所以我不去所以 leads the result clause and sits before the subject. It doesn't squeeze in after the subject like a little adverb.
-
所以因为我不喜欢因为我不喜欢……,所以……The cause comes first with 因为, the result second with 所以. Swapping them flips the whole logic and sounds broken.
Do you have to say 因为 every time you use 所以?
No — 所以 stands alone whenever the reason is already obvious.
Textbooks drill 因为...所以... as one locked pair, so learners assume 因为 is mandatory. It isn't. In everyday chat you usually drop 因为 and just fire off the result. Keep both only when you want to spell out the cause and drive the logic home. “B:因为我不喜欢运动,所以这两个我都不喜欢。” (B: Because I don't like sports, I don't like either of these.) ── [《你喜欢看老电影吗?》](/read/do-you-like-old-movies#s9)

Can you open a sentence with 所以 the way English speakers open with 'So'?
Only to resume a real reason — 所以 is not a fluffy conversation starter.
English 'So...' is often empty; it just opens your mouth while you think. Chinese 所以 almost always points back to an actual cause. Use it to resume a reason that's already on the table, not to kick off small talk. The one casual exception is the set phrase 所以呢 (so? / then what?).
| Dimension | Natural | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Opening a topic | 对了,你周末去哪? | 所以,你周末去哪? |
| Picking up a reason | 太贵了,所以我没买。 | 所以,我没买。(no cause in sight) |
Why do people say 我就不去了 when 所以我不去了 means the same thing?
就 sounds like a casual verdict; 所以 spells the cause-and-result out loud.
Both link a reason to a result, but they set a different mood. 就 treats the result as the obvious next step — quick, spoken, a little resigned. 所以 flags the logic out loud, like a tiny 'therefore.' In fast chat natives reach for 就, and save 所以 for when the cause really needs naming.
| Dimension | Natural | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Spoken, quick call | 太晚了,我就先走了。 | 太晚了,所以我先走了。(heavier, more written) |
| Naming the cause | 因为堵车,所以我迟到了。 | 堵车了,我就迟到了。(cause gets buried) |
