一起

Where does 一起 go when you're doing something with someone?

一起 sits right before the verb; the person you're with comes first.

English 'together' floats anywhere: 'together we study', 'we study together'. Chinese pins 一起 to one slot, glued to the front of the verb. The person you're doing it with can't stand next to 一起. They need 和 or 跟 in front, and that whole chunk sits before 一起. Drop 和/跟 and you get 我一起他学习, which lands on native ears as broken. 一起 is glue for the action, not a word that can grab a person. So the order is: subject, then 和/跟 + person, then 一起, then the verb. “高友朋的英语不好,我想我可以和他一起学习。” ── [《友好的高友朋》](/read/friendly-beijing-coworker#s11)

Does 我们都去 already mean we're going together?

都 means all of them. Only 一起 means as one group.

都 rounds up every member of a group, and it needs more than one person as the subject. 一起 says those people do the thing as one unit. Nope, they don't cover for each other. 他们三个昨天都加班 just means all three worked late, possibly in three different buildings. Stack them and you get the full picture: 我们晚上都一起吃饭 means nobody is missing and we eat as a group. One rule to burn in: 都 always comes first, 一起 right after it. 我们晚上一起都吃饭 is simply the wrong order.

Does 一起 mean we have to be in the same room?

No. 一起 is about one shared action, not one shared room.

一起 marks a shared action, not shared air. Two friends on a video call cooking the same dish are 一起做饭, even three cities apart. Same with 我们每晚一起打游戏, where he's in Chengdu and you're in Shanghai. What 一起 does reject is 'same clock time, separate business'. If you and your roommate both head out at eight but one goes to the gym and one to the office, that's 同时出门. 一起出门 means you walk out the door side by side. So ask yourself: are you doing the thing as one unit, or just at the same minute?

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Same thing, different citiesSubject + 一起 + Verb我们每晚一起打游戏,他在成都。我们不在一个房间,所以不能说一起。
Same clock time, separate errandsSubject + 同时 + Verb我们俩都八点出门,各走各的。我们俩一起八点出门。(sounds like one shared exit)
