Can I use 虽然 without 但是?

Yes, 虽然 can stand alone — but it can never pair with 所以.

虽然 is a flag that says a twist is coming. Your listener waits for the payoff, and 但是 is the natural one. You can skip it, and real people do: 虽然贵，我还是买了. What actually breaks the sentence is 所以. 因为……所以…… means cause and effect; 虽然……但是…… is a left turn. Mixing the two makes native ears trip.

Both spots work — but 但是 is glued to the start of the second half.

English "although" always kicks off the clause, so learners jam 虽然 up front too. It doesn't care where it sits. 我虽然很累，但是很开心 and 虽然我很累，但是很开心 both land fine. When the two halves share one person, Chinese usually names that person first. 但是 is the picky one: it stays at the front of its half, never after the subject.

但是 is fine in chat — 不过 just sounds softer and more like a shrug.

但是 is not bookish at all; it fills WeChat all day long. The three partners differ only in temperature. 可是 adds a small sigh and shows up a lot in northern speech. 不过 is the softest, perfect for breaking bad news gently. In a written report, stay with 但是, since 不过 sounds too breezy there.
