Why do Chinese dates run big-to-small, like 2015年3月5日 instead of 3月5日2015年?

Chinese dates go biggest unit to smallest: year, month, day.

Dates stack from big to small: year, then month, then day. That matches how Chinese lists addresses and names. English does the opposite, so your instinct says month first. Add 年 after the year, 月 after the month, and 日 or 号 after the day. 2015年3月5日 is standard. 3月5日2015年 sounds like you forgot the rule.

Where does a date go when you say what happened on that day?

Put the date before the verb, not at the end like English.

Time words sit before the verb, not at the end. You can put the date before the subject or after it. Both 我2015年3月5日去北京 and 2015年3月5日我去北京 work. But 我去北京2015年3月5日 sounds broken. English allows time at the end; Chinese does not.

Why is Sunday 星期天 or 星期日, not 星期七?

Sunday is 星期天 or 星期日; 星期七 does not exist.

The week runs 星期一, 星期二, 星期三, 星期四, 星期五, 星期六. Sunday breaks the number pattern. People say 星期天 in daily talk and 星期日 in writing or formal speech. 星期七 is not a word. Use 天 for casual chat and 日 for documents.

Monday to Saturday星期 + 一/二/三/四/五/六星期一, 星期六星期七 for Sunday
Sunday in casual speech星期天星期天星期日 sounds stiff in chat
Sunday in formal writing星期日星期日星期天 sounds too casual

Why is 'one month later' 一个月后, not 一月后?

一月 means January; one month as a length is 一个月.

Month names use 月 directly: 一月 is January, 二月 is February. To talk about a length of time, add 个 before 月: 一个月 means one month. So 一个月后 means after one month. 一月后 usually sounds like after January, not after a duration. “一个月后,高先明来这里坐车。” ── [《五块钱》](/read/five-yuan-kindness#s14)

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
January一月一月一个月 when you mean the month January
One month duration一个月一个月后一月后 sounds like after January
Two months duration两个月两个月后二月后 sounds like after February
