Why does 那么高 mean 'that tall' but also 'so tall'?
这么 points at what's near you or just said; 那么 points away or means 'to that degree'.
这么 points at something right here or just mentioned. 那么 points at something far away or not present. English uses one word, 'so', for both jobs, which is why this trips people up. When you mean 'to that degree', 那么 is your everyday default. 这么 works when the thing is right in front of you or fresh in the chat.

Why can 这样 stand alone but 这么 can't?
这样 can be a whole answer by itself; 这么 always needs an adjective or verb after it.
这样 can be a full answer on its own. 这么 can never stand alone; it always needs a word right after it. That's why 这样吧 (let's do it this way) lands and 这么吧 falls flat. Both 这么做 and 这样做 are fine, and they mean the exact same thing.

Why does 每天 work without 个, but 'every student' needs 每个?
Time words double as their own counter; regular nouns need a measure word after 每.
Time words like 天, 年, and 星期 double as their own counter. So 每天 and 每年 need nothing extra bolted on. Regular nouns play by a different rule: they need a measure word sitting between 每 and the noun. That gives you 每个学生 and 每本书, never 每学生.
