了1

Why can 了 show up in a sentence about tomorrow, like 明天吃了饭再走?

了 means 'done,' not 'past' — you can even use it for tomorrow.

English shoves everything into one past-tense bucket. Chinese uses 了 to tag a finished action, no matter when it happens. That's why 明天吃了饭再走 is normal, even though it's about the future. Time words like 昨天 already do the 'past' job by themselves. If 昨天 is sitting there, 了 is often optional and just adds a 'wrapped up' flavor.

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Finished action, past timeSubject + Verb + 了我昨天买了两本书我昨天买两本书 (feels unfinished)
Will finish later, then next stepSubject + Verb + 了 + 再 + Verb明天吃了饭再走明天再吃饭走了

Why is 我昨天没看见他了 wrong but 我昨天没看见他 correct?

没 already means it didn't happen, so adding 了 breaks the sentence.

没 and 了 are enemies; you can't run them in the same sentence. 没 says the action never happened, which already handles the past. 了 says the action did get done, so the two fight each other. That's why 我昨天没看见他 sounds clean and 我昨天没看见他了 sounds broken.

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Didn't see him yesterdaySubject + 没 + Verb我昨天没看见他我昨天没看见了他
Did see him yesterdaySubject + Verb + 了我昨天看见他了我昨天没看见他 (that flips the meaning)
Never happened, everSubject + 从来没 + Verb我从来没去过北京我从来没去了北京

Where exactly does 了 go — after the verb, or at the end of the sentence?

了 sits right after the verb, before the object — not at the end.

了 locks onto the verb, so it comes right after it. The object then follows the 了, not the other way around. The line 高先明看见了老先生,给老先生五块钱。 follows that order exactly: verb 看见 + 了 + object 老先生. Never park 了 before the verb or after the object. “高先明看见了老先生,给老先生五块钱。” ── [《五块钱》](/read/five-yuan-kindness#s15)

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
One specific item, doneVerb + 了 + Number + Object我买了一本书我买书一本了
General action, doneVerb + 了 + Object我昨天看书了我昨天了看书
