Why does the place come before 有 in Chinese?

Chinese says 手里有四块钱, not 有四块钱手里.

Chinese puts the place first, then 有, then the thing. English does the reverse: 'he has four yuan in his hand.' So 高先明手里有四块钱 is normal. 高先明有四块钱手里 sounds broken. The pattern is Place + 有 + Thing. For example, 桌上有两本书 means 'there are two books on the table.' The line uses this exact order: “高先明手里有四块钱。” ── [《五块钱》](/read/five-yuan-kindness#s4)

Saying what is at a placePlace + 有 + Thing桌上有两本书有两本书桌上
Saying someone has money on themPerson + Place + 有 + Thing高先明手里有四块钱高先明有四块钱手里

Why does the place phrase skip 在 before 有?

No 在. The place sits directly before 有.

The place phrase goes straight before 有. Do not add 在 just because English says 'in' or 'at.' 在手里有四块钱 sounds like the money is physically inside a hand. Use 手里有四块钱 when someone has money on them. Same pattern: 包里有三张票, 桌上有两本书.

Saying what is in a bagPlace + 有 + Thing包里有三张票在包里有三张票

Can you say 手里有 and stop there?

有 needs a thing after it; 手里有 alone sounds unfinished.

有 needs something after it. 手里有 stops too early and sounds unfinished. Even if the thing is obvious, Chinese usually says the amount and the thing. So 手里有四块钱 is complete. 桌上有三本书 is complete. Avoid 桌上有 by itself.

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Stating what is at a placePlace + 有 + Amount + Noun手里有四块钱手里有
Stating books on a tablePlace + 有 + Amount + Noun桌上有三本书桌上有

Can you use 是 instead of 有 for what is in a place?

有 says something exists; 是 points at identity. Use 有 here.

有 says something exists or someone has it. 是 points at identity: 'this is that.' 手里有四块钱 means four yuan is on him. 手里是四块钱 changes the meaning to 'what is in the hand is four yuan.' Use 有 for plain possession at a place.

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
