作 zuò

HSK 1 Writing L2

To rise, start, or bring something into being. To do, make, write, compose, or work; also the result of one's actions. A person (亻) suddenly (乍) starting a piece of work.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 工作 (gōngzuò) — work / a job
  • 作饭 做饭

Cooking is a hands-on action, so it takes 做. 作饭 reads as a typo.

  • 你在作什么? 你在做什么?

作 can't be the standalone verb 'do'. Asking what someone is up to always uses 做.

  • 我做工作 我工作 / 我在工作

工作 is already a verb on its own. Adding 做 sounds like you're assembling a job by hand.

Both sound like zuò — why is cooking 做饭 but a job 工作?

做 is the everyday action verb; 作 almost never stands alone and hides inside words.

The two characters sound identical, so meaning is the only way to choose. 做 is the hands-on verb you say out loud on its own: 做饭, 做什么, 做好. 作 almost never stands alone in modern spoken Chinese. It sits inside finished words like 工作, where it just means 'work' as part of the package. So cooking gets 做, and a job gets 作.

Cooking a meal做饭作饭
What are you doing?你在做什么?你在作什么?
A job, employment工作工做

Can I say 我做工作 to mean 'I work'?

No. 工作 is already the verb, so 做 turns 'I work' into 'I assemble a job.'

工作 pulls double duty as both a noun and a verb, so it needs no helper. 我工作 means 'I work,' and 我在工作 means 'I'm working right now.' Stick 做 in front and natives picture you building a job with your hands. To say you do your job well, lead with 工作 first: 我工作做得好.
