心 xīn

HSK 3 Writing L3

心 is a stylized drawing of the heart organ, later simplified into three dots and a hook.

The ancient form of 心 depicted a heart with a pointed bottom and lines for vessels. Over centuries it was reduced to three dots and a curved stroke. The character still symbolizes the heart as the seat of emotion and thought.

Does 心 mean 'heart' or 'mind' in Chinese?

心 covers both heart and mind, blending emotion and thought.

In Chinese, 心 is not just the physical heart; it also represents the mind, feelings, and intentions. Unlike English which separates heart and mind, Chinese traditionally sees them as one. So 心里 can mean 'in my heart' or 'in my mind'.
