谢 xiè

To decline, take leave, or apologize using speech. To thank or express gratitude; also to refuse, apologize, or wither. Speech (讠) beside a body (身) with an inch (寸): a spoken bow of thanks.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 谢谢 (xièxie) — thanks / thank you
  • 谢谢你 (xièxie nǐ) — thank you (to one person)
  • 谢谢你们 (xièxie nǐmen) — thank you all
  • 谢了 (xiè le) — thanks (casual)
  • 不谢 (bú xiè) — you're welcome (casual reply)
  • 谢你 谢谢你

谢 does not normally stand alone before 你 in thanks. Double it for a natural thank-you.

  • 我谢你 谢谢你 / 谢了

Chinese drops the subject in thanks. Adding 我 sounds like a statement, often sarcastic if 谢谢 is used.

  • 谢 不谢 / 不客气

A bare 谢 cannot reply to thanks. Use 不谢 or 不客气 instead.

Why do people say 谢谢你 when 谢谢 already means thank you?

谢谢 is complete on its own; 谢谢你 aims the thanks at one person.

谢谢 works for small, everyday moments. Someone holds a door, hands you a menu, or passes the salt. 谢谢你 points at one person and makes the thanks warmer. 谢谢你们 does the same for a group. Use 谢谢你 when the favor matters or you want to sound sincere.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Small favor from anyone谢谢谢谢你 (too pointed for a tiny thing)
Friend helps you move谢谢你谢谢 (feels a bit cold)
Thanking a group谢谢你们谢谢 (fine, but less warm)

Someone says 谢谢 to you. What do you actually say back?

Say 不客气 or 不谢. Never echo a bare 谢 back.

When someone thanks you, 不客气 is the safe default. It works with strangers, teachers, and shop staff. 不谢 is shorter and more casual, good with friends. A bare 谢 sounds like a broken echo, not a reply.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Stranger thanks you不客气谢
Friend thanks you for a small thing不谢不客气 (fine, but a bit stiff)
Someone thanks you for a real favor不客气不谢 (too casual)

Is 谢了 rude, or just casual thanks?

谢了 is casual thanks, best with friends and small favors.

谢了 sounds quick and friendly, like 'thanks, man' or 'cheers'. Use it when a friend sends a link or passes you a drink. For teachers, bosses, or strangers, use 谢谢 or 谢谢你. 谢了 is not rude, but it can feel too relaxed in formal settings.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Friend sends you a meme谢了谢谢 (fine, but more formal)
Teacher helps after class谢谢老师谢了 (too casual)
Stranger holds the door谢谢谢了 (can sound flippant)
