太 tài

Extreme, excessive, or beyond the normal limit. Too, overly, extremely, or very. A dot added to 大 (big) — even bigger than big becomes too big.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 太多 (tài duō) — too many; too much
  • 太少 (tài shǎo) — too few; too little
  • 太大 (tài dà) — too big
  • 太小 (tài xiǎo) — too small
  • 太好了 (tài hǎo le) — great; too good
  • 不太 (bú tài) — not very; not too
  • 太很 太 or 很

Chinese does not stack 太 and 很 before an adjective. Use 太 for 'too' or 很 for 'very', but not both together.

  • 太喜欢 很喜欢 or 太喜欢了

太 before a psychological verb often needs 了 to sound complete, as in 太喜欢了. Without 了, it can sound unfinished.

How is 太 different from 大?

太 means 'too' or 'excessively'; 大 means 'big'.

太 is built from 大 plus an extra dot, but the two characters are used differently. 大 describes size, while 太 describes degree that goes beyond a normal or desired limit. A phrase like 太大 means 'too big', not simply 'big'.

Why does 太 often appear with 了?

太...了 is a common pattern for strong exclamations like 'too...' or 'so...'.

When 太 is used to express an extreme degree, Chinese often adds 了 at the end of the sentence. This makes the sentence sound complete and emphatic, as in 太好了 or 太贵了. Without 了, it may sound abrupt in many everyday contexts.
