手 shǒu

手 is a drawing of a hand — fingers across the top, wrist and arm curving down.

The original picture showed a palm with fingers spreading out. Modern 手 keeps the finger strokes across the top and a long hook that stands for the wrist and lower arm. Nothing else is hiding inside it, so 手 is worth learning as a picture rather than a puzzle to decode.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 手机 (shǒujī) — mobile phone
  • 洗手 (xǐshǒu) — wash one's hands
  • 手里 (shǒu lǐ) — in one's hand (gripped)
  • 手表 (shǒubiǎo) — wristwatch
  • 手 (shǒu) — hand — perfectly fine to say on its own
  • 手电脑 笔记本电脑 / 电脑

手 is not a general 'portable' prefix. 手机 is one fixed word that happens to start with 手; you cannot bolt 手 onto other gadgets.

  • 一个手 一只手

Standard Chinese counts hands with 只, the same counter used for shoes and eyes. 一个手 instantly sounds like a textbook, not a person.

If 手 means hand, why does a phone get called 手机 — 'hand machine'?

手机 is short for 'hand-held phone' — 手 marks how you hold it, not what it is.

A phone you carry gets named after the hand that holds it. The word started as shorthand for 手提电话, the phone you lift up, as opposed to the 电话 parked on a desk. 手 does the same job in 手表, a watch worn on the wrist, and 手写, to write by hand. The trap is treating 手 as a general 'portable' stamp — 手电脑 is not a word, it is 笔记本电脑.

When you're holding something, do you say 手里 or 手上?

手里 means gripped inside your fingers; 手上 means resting on the surface.

Use 手里 when your fingers are closed around something, like 我手里拿着手机. Use 手上 when the object sits on the skin rather than inside your grip, like 手上戴着手表. Real speakers swap the two all the time without anyone blinking, but 手里 is the safer default for holding. Saying 手上拿着手机 will not confuse anyone, it just sounds a shade less precise.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Holding an object我手里拿着手机。我手上拿着手机。 (slightly off)
Wearing a watch我手上戴着手表。我手里戴着手表。 (wrong)
Safe default手里 for things you grip手上 for things on your skin

Should you say 洗我的手 or just 洗手?

For your own body, drop 我的 — the hand is obviously yours.

When the action lands on your own body, 我的 sounds fussy, so people just say 洗手, 我头疼, 他脚很大. Keep 我的 when the body part belongs to someone else or you need to point it out: 她的手很凉, 我的眼睛比你的大. Nobody will call 我的 wrong, it just lands heavier than a native speaker expects. Watch Chinese friends and you will hear the short version almost every time.

Washing your own hands我去洗手。我去洗我的手。 (clunky)
Aching body part我头疼。我的头很疼。 (fine, just heavier)
Someone else's hand她的手很凉。手很凉。 (whose hand?)
