块 kuài

块 is a clod of earth — one solid lump. That lump grew into 'chunk', and then into 'yuan'.

The left side 土 means earth or dirt. The right side 夬 is the sound part; its old picture showed a hand snapping a piece off. Put them together and you get a clod of soil — one solid lump. From 'lump' comes 'slice' (一块蛋糕), and because coins were counted as lumps, 块 became the everyday spoken word for a yuan.

土 earth, dirt 夬 sound part; old picture of a hand snapping off a piece

Common Usage & Traps

  • 一块钱 (yí kuài qián) — one yuan
  • 五块钱 (wǔ kuài qián) — five yuan
  • 一块儿 (yí kuàir) — together (spoken)
  • 两块五 (liǎng kuài wǔ) — 2.50 yuan
  • 这块 (zhè kuài) — this piece / this one
  • 一块蛋糕 (yí kuài dàngāo) — a slice of cake
  • 一个块 一块

块 already means 'one piece', so you never stack the general counting word 个 in front of it.

  • 我没块 我没钱

块 is not a noun for money by itself. You need 钱, or a number plus 块.

  • 一块儿钱 一块钱

The 儿 flips it to 'together'. Add it and you stop talking about money.

If 块 and 元 both mean yuan, why do shopkeepers say 块 while banks print 元?

块 is the spoken yuan, 元 is the written one — same money, different room.

Think buck versus dollar. Friends, markets and shopkeepers say 块; price tags, receipts and bank forms print 元. Both mean the exact same money, only the setting changes. Saying 五元 at a noodle stall isn't wrong, but it sounds like you're reading a label out loud. At a bank counter, 五块 sounds too casual for the paperwork in front of you.

Street vendor五块五元 (sounds stiff)
Bank form or receipt五元五块 (too casual for paper)
Talking to a friend十块钱十元 (sounds like a news anchor)

Why does 一块儿 mean 'let's go together' when 一块 means 'one yuan'?

一块儿 started as 'one lump of people', so the 儿 switched it to 'together'.

一块儿 literally began as 'one lump' — one clump of people standing in the same spot. The 儿 is the switch: 一块儿 (yí kuàir) means together, 一块 (yí kuài) means one yuan. Fast speech makes the two sound almost identical, so context carries the load. When you want to play it safe, 一起 works everywhere and never confuses anyone.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Making plans咱们一块儿去吧咱们一块儿钱 (nonsense)
Paying一块钱一块儿钱 (wrong spot for 儿)
Writing an essay一起一块儿 (fine in speech, too chatty on paper)

Can any solid thing take 块 — like 一块人 or 一块书?

No. 块 counts lumps and slices, never people, paper or books.

块 counts things that come as a lump or a cut slice: 一块蛋糕, 一块肉, 一块石头. It never counts people — that job belongs to 个 — and it never counts flat or bound things like 一张纸 or 一本书. If you can picture it as a brick or a slice, 块 fits. If you can't, grab a different counting word.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Cake一块蛋糕 (a slice)一个蛋糕 (a whole cake)
Person一个人一块人 (sounds like a hunk of meat)
Paper一张纸一块纸 (sounds like a stone slab)

Why is 2.50 said as 两块五 and not 两块五毛?

Spoken prices drop the small unit: 两块五 is 2.50, 两块零五 is 2.05.

Fast prices drop the small unit. 两块五 = 2.50, 一块二 = 1.20, 三块八 = 3.80. That trailing number is jiao, not yuan, so it always means ten cents each. When the jiao slot is empty, people say 零: 两块零五 = 2.05. Listen for that 零, because it's the difference between two and a half yuan and two yuan five.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
1.50 yuan一块五一块五毛 (correct, but sounds slow)
2.50 yuan两块五两块零五 (that's 2.05)
2.05 yuan两块零五两块五 (that's 2.50)
