回 huí

回 is a coil seen from above — a line that curls back inside itself.

The shape started as a swirl of water: an outer ring with a loop turning back into the middle. That one image carries the whole meaning — turning back, circling home, returning to where you started. Modern 回 barely changed, which is unusual for a character you use every single day.

囗 (outer ring) the outside of the coil 口 (inner box) the loop curling back in — just a shape here, not the word for mouth

Common Usage & Traps

  • 回家 (huí jiā) — go home
  • 回来 (huí lái) — come back (toward the speaker)
  • 回去 (huí qù) — go back (away from the speaker)
  • 回国 (huí guó) — go back to your country
  • 回学校 (huí xuéxiào) — go back to school
  • 回微信 (huí Wēixìn) — reply on WeChat

来 and 去 never sit between 回 and the place. You say 回家 or 回去, never both jammed together.

You can't just sit 'in' going home. If you want to say you're mid-journey, you're on the road home.

What's the difference between 回来 and 回去, and how do I know which one to say?

回来 means the person is coming toward you. 回去 means they're heading away.

Only the second character matters. 来 pulls toward the person talking, and 去 pushes away. So if you're sitting at home and your roommate is out, you text — they're coming back to you. Flip it: you're at the office, your roommate is home, and you send 我回去了 before you walk out. You're moving away from where you are right now. If a friend walks you to their door and you say 我回去了, you're leaving. This is the same 来 and 去 logic you already meet in 进来, 出去, and 上来.

You're home, roommate is out你什么时候回来?
You're leaving the office for home
Direction of movement回来 = toward the speaker回去 = away from the speaker

Do you say 我回家去 or 我回去家?

我回家去 is right. 来 and 去 never go between 回 and the place.

回家 behaves like one solid chunk: go-home. You can't jam 来 or 去 into the middle of it. Want the direction word anyway? It hangs off the end, like 我回家去. The same goes for any place you're heading back to, such as 我回学校去. Once the place is named, 回 takes it directly, so 我回去北京 breaks the same way. And when the whole trip is done, cap the sentence with 了.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Adding
Naming the place
Trip is finished

Why does 回微信 mean 'reply on WeChat' when 回 means 'return'?

A reply is a message coming back. 回 is the short version of 回复.

The 'come back' idea is still in there: your words travel back to whoever wrote first. So 回微信, 回消息, and 回邮件 are all normal, casual ways to say you answered someone. 回复 is the formal twin, the one you use in a work email or with a client. The thing you 回 is the message, not the human. To name the person, slide them in with 给, as in 给他回消息. Texting your boss? 我回您消息 is fine, but 我回复您 sounds like a press release.

Texting a friend
Work email
Naming the person
