Why do Chinese people say 给我一本书 and not 给一本书我?

Put the receiver right after 给: 给我一本书, not 给一本书我.

English says give a book to me, with the thing first. Chinese flips it: 给我一本书. The pattern is 给 plus person plus thing. If you put the thing first, it sounds like English word order wearing Chinese clothes.

Can 给 mean 'for' instead of 'give'?

Before a verb, 给 often means do something for someone.
