HSK 1 Writing L2

To divide, split, or separate things apart. The number eight (8). Two strokes bending and separating away from each other.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 八点 (bā diǎn) — eight o'clock
  • 八月 (bā yuè) — August (the 8th month)
  • 八十 (bā shí) — eighty
  • 十八 (shí bā) — eighteen
  • 八岁 (bā suì) — eight years old
  • 八块 (bā kuài) — eight yuan (or eight pieces)
  • 八个月 (bā ge yuè) — eight months
  • 我住了八月 我住了八个月

八月 means August (the month). For a duration of eight months, use 八个月.

  • 我去学校在八点 我八点去学校

Time words like 八点 go before the verb. Putting them at the end sounds like an English word-order leak.

Can I say 我睡了八点 to mean 'I slept for eight minutes'?

No—八点 is a clock time; use 八分钟 for a duration.

八点 answers 'when?' — 我八点睡觉 means I sleep at 8. To say how long, use 分钟: 我睡了八分钟 means I slept for eight minutes. Saying 我睡了八点 sounds like you slept at the number 8. This is a classic time vs duration mix-up.

Common slip—我睡了八点 (sounds broken)

Why does 八十 mean eighty but 十八 mean eighteen?

Chinese flips the order: 八十 = 8×10, 十八 = 10+8.

Chinese builds tens as digit + 十: 八十 = 8 × 10 = 80. Teens are the reverse: 十 + digit = 10 + 8 = 18. So 八十岁 is eighty years old, and 十八岁 is eighteen. Swapping them is one of the most common beginner number errors.
