中午

noon; midday

Noon, the midday midpoint of the clock around twelve o'clock lunch.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 中午吃饭 (zhōngwǔ chīfàn) — eat at noon / eat lunch
  • 中午十二点 (zhōngwǔ shí'èr diǎn) — twelve o'clock noon
  • 中午休息 (zhōngwǔ xiūxi) — take a noon break
  • 中午的时候 (zhōngwǔ de shíhou) — around noon / at noontime
  • 吃中午 吃午饭

中午 is a time window on the clock, not food. You cannot eat a time. The meal is 午饭 (or 中饭 in southern speech).

  • 我吃饭中午 我中午吃饭

Time words sit in front of the verb in Chinese. English parks 'at noon' at the end of the sentence, so learners copy that order and it lands wrong.

Does 中午 go before or after the verb?

中午 goes before the verb, never after it.

Time words in Chinese are pushy. They want to sit right in front of the verb, not trail behind it. English says 'I eat lunch at noon' and puts the time last, so learners do the same in Chinese. That order sounds broken to native ears. The pattern is time first, then place, then verb: 我中午在家吃饭. 早上, 下午 and 晚上 follow the exact same rule.

Why is 中午 the time but 中饭 the meal?

中午 is the clock; 午饭 or 中饭 is the food.

中午 is not a meal. It is a rough two-hour window, about 11am to 1pm, and nothing more. The meal is 午饭, and across much of southern China people say 中饭 instead. Same 中, totally different job. So 吃中午 is like saying 'eat the clock' and natives will blink at you. Keep the clock word for timing and the food word for eating.

“上午四小时,中午吃中饭。” (Four hours in the morning, then lunch at noon.)

Do you need 在 before 中午?

Skip 在 with 中午 — bare 中午 is the everyday move.

English needs the word 'at', and 在 looks like the perfect match, so learners bolt it on. But Chinese lets time words act on their own, so 中午吃饭 is the normal sentence. 在中午 is not broken, it just pins the clock to one exact point. It ends up sounding like a timetable entry instead of a human talking. Save 在 for precise moments such as 在中午十二点.
