A young dog or whelp, distinct from an adult hound. Any dog; also modern slang for dog-like people, e.g., 单身狗 (single person).
狗
Common Usage & Traps
- 小狗 — puppy; small dog (the everyday word for both)
- 一只狗 — one dog (the default animal counter 只)
- 养狗 — to keep a dog as a pet
- 狗狗 — doggy (affectionate, pet-name register)
- 热狗 — hot dog (food, no insult anywhere in it)
-
一个狗一只狗个 is the catch-all counter, so learners grab it for everything. Animals have their own: 只 for dogs, cats, birds, chickens. 一个狗 gets understood, but it lands like 'one unit of dog'.
-
一条狗一只狗Not broken, just off-key. 条 is for long things (一条鱼, 一条路), and with dogs it mostly shows up in curses or old sayings. For your neighbor's beagle, 一只狗 is what people actually say.
-
Chinese names small animals by putting 小 in front — 小狗, 小猫, 小鸡 — not by describing them with 的.
Why do people say 一只狗 and not 一个狗?
Dogs get 只, not 个 — 一个狗 sounds like you filed your pet under 'random stuff.'
The one exception worth knowing: 一条狗. It is not wrong, but it is heavily marked. In everyday speech about a real pet, stick with 一只狗.
| Dimension | Natural | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Counting your own pet |
| Small animals in general |
| What to do with 条 | 一只狗 (safe default) | 一条狗 as your everyday choice |
Does 小狗 actually mean 'puppy', or just 'small dog'?
小狗 covers any dog on the small side — no age check, unlike English 'puppy'.
This exactly matches the opening rhyme of the story: “小狗小的狗。” (A puppy is a small dog.)
| Dimension | Natural | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| A young dog |
| A small full-grown dog | 小狗 | 小狗儿 (odd here) |
| Same pattern, other animals |
Why does calling someone 小狗 land badly in Chinese, when 'dog' sounds friendly in English?
狗 is an insult first and a pet second — English 'dog' never carries that weight.
The word is not banned, though. Self-mocking slang is everywhere and totally fine: 单身狗 (single), 累成狗 (dead tired). 热狗 is just a hot dog, 狗年 is the Year of the Dog, and 狗狗 is affectionate for an actual pet. Rule of thumb: 狗 about yourself is funny, 狗 about someone else is a fight.
| Dimension | Natural | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Complimenting a friend's luck |
| Making fun of yourself | 单身狗,累成狗 | using 狗 on another person |
| Talking about your pet |
