néng v.

To possess the raw strength of a bear, the animal this character originally depicts. To can, be able to, or may — expressing capability, skill, or permission. A bear (the shape of 能) standing upright on its hind legs, radiating sheer power.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 能来 (néng lái) — can come
  • 能去 (néng qù) — can go
  • 能说汉语 (néng shuō hànyǔ) — can speak Chinese
  • 能好很多 (néng hǎo hěn duō) — can get much better
  • 我能汉语。 我会说汉语。

能 needs an action verb after it. 汉语 is a noun, so 我能汉语 is broken. For learned language skill, 会 is the natural default.

  • 我不能说汉语。 我不会说汉语。

If you mean you don't know how to speak Chinese, 不能 sounds like you are not allowed or physically blocked. Use 不会 for lack of skill.

  • 明天能下雨。 明天会下雨。

会 predicts future events. 能 talks about ability or conditions, so 明天能下雨 sounds wrong for a simple weather prediction.

What's the real difference between 会, 能, and 可以 when they all mean 'can'?

会 is learned skill or prediction; 能 is physical or situational; 可以 is permission or polite.

会 covers skills you learned well, like speaking a language or swimming. 能 covers what you can do right now, or what circumstances allow. 可以 is the safe choice for asking permission or making polite suggestions. When you mix them, natives hear a different flavor, not just a grammar error.

DimensionNaturalAvoid
Learned skill我会说汉语我能说汉语 (when you mean know-how)
Right now / circumstances我今天病了,不能游泳我今天病了,不会游泳
Permission这里可以抽烟吗这里能抽烟吗? (often okay, but 可以 is the safer polite default)
Prediction明天会下雨明天能下雨

Why can't I say 我能汉语 for 'I can speak Chinese'?

能 must be followed by a verb, not a language noun.

English speakers sometimes drop the action verb and say 'I can English.' Chinese never drops the action verb after 能, so 我能汉语 is broken. You need 我能说汉语, using 说 as the action verb. When you mean a learned skill, 我会说汉语 is even more natural.

Why does 我不会说汉语 mean 'I can't speak Chinese' but 我不能说汉语 sounds like I'm not allowed?

不能 means blocked by circumstances; 不会 means you never learned the skill.

Use 不会 when you lack a learned skill, like speaking Chinese or driving. Use 不能 when something outside you blocks you: rules, injury, time, or lack of permission. If you say 我不能说汉语, people may think you are forbidden, not that you don't know how.

DimensionNaturalAvoid
Lack of skill我不会说汉语我不能说汉语
Not allowed / blocked我不能说汉语我不会说汉语

Why is 能 used before 好 in 能好很多?

能 before an adjective means 'can become' or 'is possible to become'.

能 can also sit before an adjective to talk about a possible change. 能好很多 means 'can get much better,' not 'will get much better.' Use 会好很多 when you want to make a confident prediction. This pattern shows up often when talking about wishes or improvement. “我教他英文,他教我中文,每天学几个词,很快,我们的英语和汉语都能好很多。” (I teach him English, he teaches me Chinese; we learn a few words every day, and soon both our English and Chinese can get much better.) ── [《友好的高友朋》](/read/friendly-beijing-coworker#s13)
