明天

Common Usage & Traps

  • 明天见 (míngtiān jiàn) — See you tomorrow
  • 明天早上 (míngtiān zǎoshang) — tomorrow morning
  • 明天再说 (míngtiān zàishuō) — let's talk about it tomorrow / deal with it tomorrow
  • 在明天 明天

English 'on Monday' makes learners bolt 在 onto every time word. 明天 already says when, so it walks up to the verb barefoot.

  • 我给您钱明天 我明天给您钱

English parks 'tomorrow' at the end of the sentence. Chinese puts the time word right after the person, before the verb.

Why does 'I'll give you the money tomorrow' turn into 我明天给您钱 and not 我给您钱明天?

Time words like 明天 go before the verb, never at the end of the sentence.

English drops 'tomorrow' at the back of the sentence, so learners copy that habit straight into Chinese. Chinese does the opposite: when first, then the action. So 我明天给您钱 is the normal order and 我给您钱明天 sounds broken to native ears. The same slot holds 今天, 昨天, 下个月 and 明年.

Do you need 在 in front of 明天, as in 在明天去北京?

Drop the 在. 明天 already answers 'when', so it stands alone.

Learners add 在 because English needs 'on' before days and dates. Plain time words like 今天, 明天 and 昨天 don't take it. 我明天去北京 is what people actually say, and 我在明天去北京 sounds clumsy. Clock and calendar phrases behave differently, which is where the confusion comes from.

Stacked time phrase我明天早上八点出发我在明天早上八点出发

If 了 means something already happened, why does 明天我就有空了 talk about tomorrow?

了 isn't past tense. It marks a change, so it can sit happily with 明天.

了 signals a new situation or a finished change, not a past event. 明天我就有空了 means the free time starts tomorrow, and 明天我就走了 means you'll be off tomorrow. So future sentences with 了 are completely normal. What never works is glueing 了 onto 明天 itself: 明天了 is not a thing.

What 了 attaches to明天我就不忙了明天了我就不忙
