What is the difference between 文 and 汉 in Chinese?

文 refers to writing, culture, or language (as in 中文), while 汉 refers to the Han Chinese people or ethnicity (as in 汉字, 汉语).

文 (wén) is a broad term for written language, culture, and civilization. It appears in words like 中文 (Chinese language), 文化 (culture), and 作文 (essay). 汉 (hàn) specifically refers to the Han ethnic group, the majority in China. It is used in 汉字 (Chinese characters), 汉语 (Chinese language), and 汉族 (Han ethnicity). While both can relate to Chinese language, 文 emphasizes the written or cultural aspect, and 汉 emphasizes the ethnic or linguistic identity.

When should I use 文 and when should I use 字?

文 refers to language or writing in general, while 字 refers to a single character or word.

文 (wén) is used for language as a whole, especially in terms of writing and culture, as in 中文 (Chinese language) or 英文 (English). 字 (zì) means a written character or word, as in 汉字 (Chinese character) or 生字 (new word). So 中文 is the Chinese language, but 汉字 are the individual characters used to write it. You would not say 中字 to mean the Chinese language.
