买 mǎi

To exchange shells/money for goods at a market.

To buy, purchase, or shop for something. A basket-like top (乛) over a head (头): put money in the basket, take goods away.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 买东西 (mǎi dōngxi) — to buy things / go shopping
  • 买水果 (mǎi shuǐguǒ) — to buy fruit
  • 买衣服 (mǎi yīfu) — to buy clothes
  • 买菜 (mǎi cài) — to buy groceries / vegetables
  • 买书 (mǎi shū) — to buy books
  • 买给他 买给他一本书 / 给他买一本书

买给 can't just float in mid-air. Either name the thing you bought, or move 给 in front of 买 with the person.

  • 买一个东西 买东西

买东西 is the default for shopping. 买一个东西 only works when you're pointing at one specific object on the shelf.

买 vs 卖: how do I remember which one is buy and which one is sell?

卖 wears a price tag (十) on top; 买 has no tag because you grab the goods and take them home.

卖 has a little 十 on top, like a price tag stuck on goods you're selling. 买 has no tag, because you're the one grabbing stuff and taking it home. They share the same letters mǎi and mài, but the tone flips the meaning. 买 is third tone (mǎi): it dips down then rises, like reaching down to scoop something up. 卖 is fourth tone (mài): it drops flat, like pushing goods across the counter. Mix them up and you'll cheerfully announce you sell your phone when you meant to buy one. “他去市场买苹果。” (He goes to the market to buy apples.) ── 《这个苹果不是中国苹果》

Why is it 买东西 and not 买物 for buying things?

东西 is simply the everyday word for stuff; 买物 sounds like a stiff dictionary entry.

东西 literally means east-west, but in daily speech it just means things or stuff. The popular story says old markets sat in the east and west sides of a city. That story is fun lore, not proven fact. The real answer is that 东西 is simply the fixed word people use. 买物 isn't broken grammar, but nobody says it outside ancient poetry. So going shopping is always 去买东西 in normal speech.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Shopping我去买东西。我去买物。
Feeleveryday speechstiff, bookish

Where does 给 go when you buy something for someone?

Put 给 in front of 买 to say you're buying for someone: 我给妈妈买花.

To say you buy something for someone, slide 给 in front of the verb 买. 我给妈妈买花 means I buy flowers for mom. You can also flip it to 我买花给妈妈, with the person sitting at the end. Both versions sound natural, so pick whichever flows. Just don't jam 给 between 买 and the thing you bought, or the sentence falls apart.

For someone我给妈妈买花。我买给花妈妈。
Person at the end我买花给妈妈。我买花妈妈给。
