九 jiǔ

HSK 1 Writing L2

九 began as a drawing of a bent arm at the elbow — and was later borrowed for the number nine.

Picture an arm bent sharply at the joint, hand reaching forward. Ancient scribes drew that hooked shape for 九. It had nothing to do with the number nine at first — the symbol was simply borrowed for its sound, which happens constantly in Chinese writing.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 九块 (jiǔ kuài) — nine yuan (colloquial money)
  • 九点 (jiǔ diǎn) — nine o'clock
  • 九月 (jiǔ yuè) — September (ninth month)
  • 九十 (jiǔ shí) — ninety
  • 九个人 (jiǔ ge rén) — nine people
  • 九岁 (jiǔ suì) — nine years old
  • 九点九 (meant as a time) 九点九分

Spoken alone, 九点九 sounds like the decimal 'nine point nine'. For 9:09 you must add 分 so the listener hears minutes, not math.

  • 九点九 (meant as a price) 九块九

Money decimals use 块 and 毛, never 点. So 9.9 yuan on the street is 九块九, not 九点九.

How do I say '9:09' in Chinese without it sounding like the decimal 9.9?

Say 九点九分 — the 分 marks the minutes and kills the decimal reading.

For time, 点 means 'o'clock' and 分 means 'minutes'. If you stop at 九点九, people hear the math decimal 'nine point nine'. Adding 分 snaps it back into clock time. So 9:09 is 九点九分, while 9:00 is just 九点 with no 分 tacked on.

Does 九 change its tone when the next word is also third tone?

Yes. Before another third tone, 九 flips to second tone — 九点 sounds like 'jiú diǎn'.

Chinese avoids two third tones in a row. When they collide, the first one flips to second tone in speech. 九 (jiǔ) and 点 (diǎn) are both third tone, so 九点 comes out 'jiú diǎn'. But 九块 keeps 九 as jiǔ, because 块 is fourth tone. The dictionary spelling never changes — only your mouth does.
