该 gāi

HSK 3 Writing L3

To owe a debt or obligation to someone.

Should, ought to; to be someone's turn; the said or aforementioned. Speech (讠) reaching the root (亥) of what is necessary — what should be.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 应该 (yīnggāi) — should; ought to
  • 该走了 (gāi zǒu le) — time to go
  • 不该 (bù gāi) — should not
  • 活该 (huógāi) — deserved; serves you right
  • 该你 (gāi nǐ) — it's your turn
  • 该去吗 应该去吗

For asking whether one should go, Chinese strongly prefers 应该去吗; bare 该去吗 sounds clipped and is less natural in everyday questions.

  • 我该这个 我应该要这个 / 我要这个

该 cannot directly take a noun object meaning 'should have this'; use 应该 + verb or a plain verb.

When should I use 该 alone instead of 应该?

该 is shorter and more spoken; 应该 is the standard, fuller form for 'should'.

Both express 'should/ought to', but 该 is often used in quick spoken reminders or fixed patterns like 该走了 ('time to go') and 该你了 ('your turn'). 应该 is more neutral and common in full sentences, especially in writing or careful speech. In many sentences they can swap, but 应该 is safer for learners because it is never wrong in the 'should' meaning.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Tone该走了 (spoken, brief)该走 (too abrupt without 了)
Standard 'should'你应该多休息你该多休息 (okay but less standard)
Turn-taking该你了应该你了 (wrong pattern)

Is 该 easy to confuse with 刻 because they look similar?

Yes, 该 and 刻 share the right-side component and can be mixed up when reading quickly.

该 (gāi) has the speech radical 讠 on the left, while 刻 (kè) has the knife radical 刂 on the right. The shared right side makes them look alike, but the meaning is completely different: 该 relates to 'should/this', and 刻 means 'carve' or 'quarter (of an hour)'. Check the radical on the left or right to tell them apart.
