非 fēi

Two bird wings back-to-back in opposite directions. Not, wrong, non-, or to negate. Two mirrored wing shapes facing apart, like opposing sides rejecting each other.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 非常 (fēicháng) — very, extremely
  • 是非 (shìfēi) — right and wrong; gossip
  • 非法 (fēifǎ) — illegal
  • 非好 不好

非 is not the everyday 'not' before adjectives. Use 不 for normal negation.

  • 非是 不是

非 is not a modern drop-in for 不 before 是. It sounds classical or fixed.

  • 很非常高兴 非常高兴

非常 already means 'extremely'. Stacking 很 on top is a double 'very'.

Can I just use 非 anywhere I'd use 不 to mean 'not'?

No. 非 is not the everyday 'not' — it mostly lives inside fixed words.

不 is your everyday 'not', and it goes before verbs and adjectives all the time. 非 mostly hides inside fixed words like 非常 (very), not as a free-standing 'not'. If you say 非好 instead of 不好, it sounds like broken classical Chinese. Stick with 不 for normal negation, and treat 非 as a word-building piece.

Everyday negation不好 (not good)非好
Before 是不是 (is not)非是
Fixed word非常 (very)非很

Is 非常 just a fancy way to say 很?

Sort of, but 非常 is stronger and more emphatic than plain 很.

很 is the neutral default 'very' that you use in normal conversation. 非常 turns the volume up, closer to 'extremely' or 'exceptionally' in English. Both 很高兴 and 非常高兴 are fine, but 非常高兴 packs more punch. Don't double them up: 很非常高兴 is wrong.

Pick one 'very'非常高兴 (extremely happy)很非常高兴
Neutral tone很高兴 (very happy)很非常高兴
Placement非常高兴高兴非常

What does 非...不可 actually mean — 'not...cannot'?

非...不可 means 'must' or 'have to' — the two negatives cancel out.

Literally it reads like 'if not X, then not okay', which is why it lands as 'simply must'. 我非去不可 means 'I absolutely have to go'. It's stronger and more dramatic than 必须, so save it for when you really want to stress that there's no way around it. In casual speech people often drop the 不可 and just say 我非去, but the full form is the safe, standard one.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Strong 'must'我非去不可 (I absolutely must go)我非去不
Neutral 'must'我必须去 (I have to go)我非去 (in formal writing)
Meaning'no way around it''not...cannot' (literal misread)
