班 bān

班 is two pieces of jade with a knife between them: to split jade into shares.

The old picture shows a knife (刂) cutting jade (王) into two parts. That idea of splitting and arranging became a set group, like a class, team, or work shift.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 一班 (yī bān) — Class 1
  • 二班 (èr bān) — Class 2
  • 三班 (sān bān) — Class 3
  • 我们班 (wǒmen bān) — our class
  • 我班 我们班

For groups you belong to, Chinese uses 我们, not 我. 我班 sounds like 'I class'.

  • 去班 去学校

班 is a group, not a place you go to. If you mean go to school, say 去学校.

What's the difference between 上班 and 工作?

上班 means going to your workplace; 工作 means the job or work itself.

上班 is about the routine of showing up at a place. 工作 is the broader idea: your job, tasks, or a project. You can say 我的工作很有趣, but 我的上班很有趣 sounds broken. 上班 is a two-part phrase, so you can say 上一天班 for 'do a day's work'.

Talking about your job我的工作很忙我的上班很忙
Going to your workplace我八点上班我八点上工作
Doing a day's work上一天班上一天工作

If you're in Class 3, why is it 我在三班, not 我在三教室?

班 is the class group or a scheduled lesson; 教室 is just the room.

三班 names your class group, like a team. 三教室 would mean 'classroom number three', not the group you belong to. For the room, say 我在教室. For attending a lesson, say 我上课.

Your class group我在三班我在三教室
The room我在教室我在班

Why do Chinese people say 我们班 instead of 我班?

Chinese prefers 我们班 for your class, because 班 feels like a team you belong to.

For groups like class, school, or company, Chinese often uses 我们 instead of 我. 我班 sounds like 'I class' and breaks the team feeling. Say 我们班, 我们学校, 我们公司.
