手里 means gripped inside your fingers; 手上 means resting on the surface.
Use 手里 when your fingers are closed around something, like 我手里拿着手机. Use 手上 when the object sits on the skin rather than inside your grip, like 手上戴着手表. Real speakers swap the two all the time without anyone blinking, but 手里 is the safer default for holding. Saying 手上拿着手机 will not confuse anyone, it just sounds a shade less precise.

Nobody will call 我的 wrong, it just lands heavier than a native speaker expects. Watch Chinese friends and you will hear the short version almost every time.
