HSK 1 Writing L2
Origin & Mnemonic:

The sun; a solar disk and daylight. Sun, day, daytime, or date. A rectangular sun with a horizontal line in its center.

日 is a drawing of the sun — a round disc with a line across the middle.

In the oldest Chinese writing, 日 was a circle with a dot or short bar in the center, showing the sun's disc. Over centuries the circle squared off into a rectangle and the dot flattened into a bar. That's why 日 still hides inside words about light and time, like 明 (sun + moon = bright).

Common Usage & Traps

  • 生日 (shēngrì) — birthday
  • 日本 (Rìběn) — Japan
  • 五月一日 (wǔ yuè yī rì) — May 1st (formal date)
  • 今天几月几日? (in casual chat) 今天几月几号?

Spoken Chinese uses 号 for the day of the month. 日 here sounds like a news anchor reading a government notice.

  • 三日 (meaning 'three days') 三天

日 marks a spot on the calendar. For a length of time you always use 天.

  • 我的日 (meaning 'my day') 我的一天

You can't use 日 by itself for 'a day' in casual speech. Use 天.

号 vs 日: Which word do you use for days of the month?

号 is the everyday spoken word for calendar days (今天五号). 日 is formal, written, or news language (五月一日).

Think of 号 as the word you'd text a friend, and 日 as the word printed on an official form. Asking about today's date at the office, you say 今天几号? On a wedding invite or a bank contract, you'll see 五月一日. Drop 日 into casual chat and you sound like a news anchor reading a notice out loud. Real dialogue keeps it simple: “今天是几月几号?” ── [《问问题》](/read/asking-questions-daily-life#s2)

Can you say 三日 to mean 'three days'?

No. 三天 means 'three days' (a length of time). 三日 means 'the 3rd of the month' (a date).

日 points at a slot on the calendar, while 天 measures how long something lasts. Counting days? Use 天: 我学了三天中文. Naming a date? Use 日, or 号 in speech: 三月三日. Swap them and you end up saying 'I studied for the 3rd of the month' when you mean three whole days.

If 日 means 'sun', why does it mean 'Japan' in 日本?

日本 means 'origin of the sun' — the land where the sun rises, named by Chinese looking east.

日 is the sun, so 日本 literally reads 'sun's origin.' Ancient Chinese named the islands to their east as the place where the sun comes up. That same sun carries into 日语 (Japanese language) and 日元 (Japanese yen), where 日 just stands for Japan.
