hòu

HSK 1 Writing L2
Origin & Mnemonic:

A ruler issuing commands by mouth; sovereign or queen. Empress, queen; after, behind, later (simplified for 後). Top 𠂆 issues commands, bottom 口 speaks; simplified stand-in for 後 “behind/after.”

Common Usage & Traps

  • 以后 (yǐhòu) — afterwards, from now on
  • 后来 (hòulái) — later on (inside a past story)
  • 然后 (ránhòu) — and then, next
  • 最后 (zuìhòu) — finally, at the very end
  • 后面 (hòumiàn) — behind, at the back
  • 后边 (hòubian) — behind (casual, northern)
  • 后天 (hòutiān) — the day after tomorrow
  • 三天后 (sān tiān hòu) — three days later
  • 后来我要去上海 以后我要去上海

后来 only looks backward at a past story. For anything still ahead of you, use 以后.

  • 后我去了商店 后来我去了商店 / 然后我去了商店

Bare 后 cannot open a sentence. It needs a partner word in front of it.

  • 他在后 他在后面 / 他在后边

后 never stands alone as a location. For 'behind', it needs 面 or 边.

Why do I see 后 in mainland books but 後 in Taiwanese ones?

Mainland China merged 後 into 后; Taiwan and Hong Kong still keep them apart.

These began life as two completely unrelated characters. 后 meant 'queen' — the 皇后 in old court dramas. 後 meant 'after' or 'behind'. When mainland China simplified its writing, 後 got folded into 后, so one shape now does both jobs. Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau never merged them: 以後 is 'after', 皇后 is still 'empress'. If you learn simplified characters, write 后 everywhere and you are always right. You only meet 後 when reading traditional text.

What is the real difference between 以后, 后来 and 然后?

以后 points forward, 后来 looks back at a past story, 然后 just means 'and then'.

以后 means 'from that point on' and is happy pointing at the future: 以后我要学中文. 后来 only works inside a past story, as the narrator saying 'later on': 后来他搬到北京了. You can never use 后来 about something still ahead of you. 然后 is a plain sequence connector, 'and then', chaining steps in order: 我先吃饭,然后去上班. Quick rule: 以后 = from now on, 后来 = later in that story, 然后 = next step.

WordWhat it points toExample
以后future or past, from that point on以后我会来
后来past story only后来他走了
然后next step in a sequence然后我就睡了
后来 + futureimpossible后来我要去 (wrong)

Is 三天后 correct, or do I need 三天以后?

Both are fine. 后 glues right onto time words; it just can't open a sentence.

Chunking 后 onto a time phrase is completely normal: 三天后, 两年后, 下班后. Adding 以 or 之 gives you 三天以后 and 三天之后, which sound a touch smoother in relaxed conversation. Neither version is wrong, so stop agonizing over it. The real mistake is leaving 后 alone at the front of a clause: 后我回家了 sounds broken. Say 后来我回家了 or 然后我回家了.

Where it sitsNaturalAvoid
After a time word三天后 / 两年后
Casual speech三天以后 / 三天之后
Opening a sentence后来我走了 / 然后我走了后我走了
Standing alone for 'later'后来

Are 后面 and 后边 actually different, or is one just wrong?

Same meaning, different flavor: 后面 is the safe standard pick, 后边 is casual and northern.

Both mean 'behind' or 'the back part', and neither is wrong. 后面 is the standard form you see in textbooks, news and most of China. 后边 turns up in relaxed northern speech and usually points at a physical spot, like a seat or a building. When in doubt, pick 后面 — it never sounds off. The same pattern repeats with 前面/前边 and 里面/里边, and 后头 is the even more colloquial Beijing version.
